Digital Playground goes back to 1993, started by a director who goes by Joone, real name Ali Davoudian, and they actually began making adult CD-ROM computer games before video content was even the focus. That’s a wild starting point looking back, but it made them pioneers in getting porn onto actual personal computers instead of just VHS tapes, and their virtual sex CD-ROM and DVD series became genuinely top sellers in that format back when that was a real category.

The move that really put them on the map was Pirates in 2005, Joone’s own passion project, roughly a million dollar budget, real high-def shooting, an actual original score, elaborate sets, and it premiered theatrically at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. That’s not normal for this industry, most studios don’t get anywhere near a real theatrical premiere. By 2006 Reuters was naming them one of the handful of studios that actually dominate the U.S. market. Bibi Jones signed with them, and Jessa Rhodes has scenes here too.

If you want porn that occasionally remembers it’s also supposed to be a movie, complete with actual production value instead of just a bedroom and a ring light, this is one of the few studios that’s proven they can pull that off at a genuinely big scale.
